For decades the Grimsley High School Madrigal Singers have been a bastion of artistic prowess throughout the state. Easily the most recognizable ensemble at Grimsley in their authentic Renaissance attire, they are even better known for holding the highest possible standards of musicianship and professionalism.
The Madrigals are proud to represent Grimsley and Greensboro locally, nationally and internationally as they continue a long tradition of excellence. They boast a resume of performances in many of the world’s most prestigious venues. The students and their families are solely responsible for the program’s fundraising, and are grateful for the support given by this community throughout the years. Each year the Madrigals prepare repertoire for at least eight major performance events: the Carolina Renaissance Festival, Caroling, Winter Concert, Madrigal Dinner, NCMEA Festival, Master’s of the Hall Annual a Cappella Showcase, a touring program and a Spring Concert. The Madrigals also sing for school assemblies, local civic functions, and myriad other organizations. Many of the students also participate in the annual school musical, Governor’s School, orchestra, band, school and private recitals, concerto competitions, and various camps and workshops.
The Madrigal Singers are a select mixed chamber group open by competitive audition to all advanced singers. Enrollment is limited, and students must have participated in another ensemble at Grimsley to be eligible to audition. Repertoire is almost exclusively a cappella. Regular after school participation in rehearsals and performances is required. Students individually design and purchase materials to create an authentic Renaissance costume.
